Plans for the BANKAPLEINFESTIJN are underway

29 September 2011- Various local residents have responded to the call for new volunteers for the wijkfeestcomité (community festivities organizing committee). Committee chairman Bert Bos, told those at the recent A&W Community Council meeting about the plans for the Bankapleinfestijn in 2012.

The community feast will take place during the first half of September 2012 around Bankaplein from 5 pm till midnight. The provisional programme will kick off with a welcoming drink for local residents from the Archipelbuurt and Willemspark and music provided by fellow residents, followed by a festive meal accompanied by music from a professional band. In principle the festive meal is intended for adults but a short children’s programme will be organised for the beginning of the evening.

The wijkfeestcomité will submit a subsidy application (via the A&W Residents Association) to the City Council.

The wijkfeestcomité of eight women and one man (Bert) would welcome another male volunteer to address the gender balance somewhat.

One of the original committee members, Betty Aardewerk, says the reinforcements and the core members are getting along well.

Inspiration for a new street party?

A three-day street party was held on 17 - 19 June 1981 in Bonistraat and Celebesstraat in Archipelbuurt to celebrate their 100-year anniversary.

Initiators and organisers were Felix Hentenaar and Maria Morel with help from Paul Nieuwenhuijzen. Eduard E. Heidenreich made a two-part film of the proceedings.

Who is prepared to help organize the Bankapleinfestijn in 2012?

1 September 2011 – The community festivities organizing committee has already received a few replies but hoped for more support.

If you would care to think along with the committee or take part please get in touch with wijkfeest@archipelwillemspark.nl

We’ll send you more information and would really appreciate you coming to the brainstorming planned for Thursday 8 September.

Community Fair not viable

Much to our regret we have decided to cancel the Community Fair planned for 18 June because financially and structurally it appears that a Banka Party that suits the requirements of both the shopkeepers and the residents is unfeasible. There is now an idea afoot for a new construction for the festivities: a community feast around the fountain accompanied by live music and acts in September 2012.

We are looking for reinforcements both on the creative and the organisational front so everyone who would like to help realise this community initiative get in touch before 1 September 2011 via: wijkfeest@archipelwillemspark.nl

A bit of a mouthful but the Nazomerpleinfonteinfestijn/End of Summer Fountain Feast could turn out to be a rather appetising event. To be continued …

Wijkfeestcomité 2011:  Koen Bender, Marianne van Drunen, Luce Gelling, Quirina van Hof, Isabelle Hylkema, Martine de Lange, Annette Polderman, Dano Roelvink, Gérite Ruig and Erika Verhulst .

COUNCIL SUBSIDIES

Organize a street party and get to know your neighbours

Get in your application for a subsidy soon

A street party is an ideal way to break the ice and bring people in your street together. It's a lot of fun for adults and children as the photos from earlier parties in Celebestraat, Batjanstraat and Balistraat testify.

The Hague council will continue to support inner city neighbourhood and street events in 2011 but applications must be submitted between 1 January – 15 June 2011 and you should allow six weeks for the application to be processed.

The events involve small-scale activities of an expressly open character initiated by a number of individual residents. All Hague citizens with a interesting idea for an event in their street or neighbourhood can apply for a subsidy of maximum €650 (does not include the cost of food or drinks). Such an application does however have to fulfil certain criteria. More...

The subsidy was introduced in 2001 with great success. In the succeeding years initiatives have included street play-days, sports and games events, amateur dramatics and street parties. The idea behind the events is to bring residents from different backgrounds and cultures together in a relaxed way in their own neighbourhood or street.
