Insulation and ventilation

What happens to the air in your house when you insulate and how to keep condensation under control.

A healthy house depends on moisture balance and ventilation
Each day a family of four produces about 10 to 15 litres of water, mainly from exhalation.  Animals, plants and activities such as washing, cooking and tumble-drying all bring more moisture, mixed with harmful substances, into your house.

When is insulation the wrong thing to do?
If you opt for double-glazing and on top of that close off every little crack or gap, moisture will remain in the air or will condensate on any cold surface be it floors or walls, which will then start to rot. These are ideal places for mould and dust mites to thrive, causing allergies and asthma and eczema problems, to which children are particularly susceptible.

What is the right way to ventilate?
The solution lies in good ventilation through an air grille or vent or an adjustable louvre window positioned al least 1.8 m from the floor. Anything lower will result in a draught. When showering or cooking, turn on the extractor fan to the highest position. Rooms that are used intensively need to be aired for at least 15 minutes a day.

Is much energy lost by ventilation?
No. Heating humid air uses more energy than heating dry air. Apart from this, heat recovery ventilation systems (HRV) are available that will allow you to save energy by reducing heating (and cooling) requirements when you away.

Insulating glass should be made-to-measure
Even within one house a number of different systems may be chosen, as not all windows are the same and may be subject to different weather conditions. You may want to retain old sash windows at the front of the house. In that case, choose single glazing and a good draught-exclusion system with an invisible ventilation grille.  Windows at the rear of the same house may need a different approach.

It’s more economical together! Want to take part?

That’s right, as an Archipeller and a member of the A&W Sustainability working group I have decided to get cracking with energy-saving measures in my house before winter sets in.

Radior insulation foil
So I’m starting with the most straightforward measure: insulating the radiators. I have calculated that taken all together, the radiators on the four floors in my house measure 30 m by an average height of 50 cm.

New product
At the energy-saving information stand in the Binnenhof on Sunday 11 September 2011 (as part of The Hague Heritage Days) I discovered a new sort of  radiator insulating foil made by TONZON. Unlike the usual products on the market this is really thin and can be fixed with double-sided tape to the back of the radiator itself. This means the wall remains cold and the heat stays inside the house, cutting down heat loss and increasing efficiency. It’s a really good product.

Costs

The insulating foil costs €22.13 (including VAT and the double-sided tape) per roll 50 cm x 10 m. So I will need three rolls. However if you place an order for 25 rolls the price is 30% cheaper: €15.47 incl. VAT, a saving of around €7 per roll! Certainly worth doing.

Save both energy & money

Our neighbourhood is becoming increasingly energy conscious and insulation is one aspect of this. That’s why I’m looking for fellow residents who would also like to increase the efficiency of their central heating and save on the investment into the bargain. If you need more convincing, view the instructional video at www.tonzon.nl

My proposal

I will be taking individual orders by e-mail until the end of September to make up the 22 rolls of insulating foil (my 3 rolls + 22 = 25). So if you are interested please mail me the following details:

  1. Your calculation for the number of 10- metre rolls you require (remember the rolls are 50 cm high);
  2. Your name, address, telephone number and your e-mail address;

As soon as the individual orders amount to 22 rolls I will mail you to say the order is going ahead. I will pay up front for the total order, which will be delivered to me. I’ll send an e-mail as soon as the order arrives and you can come along to collect and pay for your rolls of insulating foil. What could be more convenient?

It is important that you let me know if you want to take part before 30 September after which I will be placing the order.

As well as TONZON, www.eco-logisch.nl also has a good selection of energy-saving products.

Half a million euros available in 2011 for solar panels

In order to encourage the use of sustainable energy the municipal council is making available subsidies for solar panels to the value of almost €2 million 2 until 2014.

To qualify for the subsidy, applicants must indicate how they are going to use the money and how much they need.

Conditions:

  • A  600 watt capacity minimum per application
  • The panels must be installed within 6 months of receipt of subsidy
  • Only solar panels generating electricity are eligible: solar boilers are not included in this arrangement.

More detailed information about the conditions will be available after 8 September.

Open application process

The applicants with the lowest subsidy to wattage ratio will be evaluated first. In this way more energy will be generated with the funds available.

Hague residents can apply for the subsidy from 8 September until 3 November 2011.

Ban toxic spraying from our city!

While we do our bit to save bees and the environment by creating “bee hotels”, sowing wild flower seeds and following bee-keeping courses, the municipal council undoes all the good work in one fell swoop by spraying our streets with toxic chemicals.

The  Hague council is currently carrying out a trial using Roundup, a chemical weedkiller, to combat weeds in the districts of Escamp and Loosduinen in an attempt to cut down on the cost of personnel.

A campaign has been started to oppose such a policy.  Give your support and sign the petition by going to:

The Municipality of The Hague emitted much more CO2 in 2010 than the previous year, according to data from the municipality. CO2 emissions increased more than 50%.

According to the Municipal Executive (college van burgemeester en wethouders), the higher CO2 emissions were caused by increased energy use in municipal buildings partially due to the extreme cold last winter. More ...

Throw it way? No way!

11 October 2011 - It has proved a great success in Amsterdam and now the first Repair Café is opening in The Hague as part of a joint initiative of the Haags Milieucentrum (HMC) and the Repair Café Foundation. The HMC is currently seeking volunteers to carry out the repairs and coordinate proceedings. Please contact the Haags Milieucentrum and help make the Repair Café in The Hague a great success too!

More and more we throw away things that could easily be repaired and given a new lease of life. Fortunately there are plenty of people around with practical know how about fixing things. We should cultivate such citizens and learn from them … this is the idea behind the Repair Café: if it's broke, fix it!. Learn from others how to replace a plug on that toaster that blew a fuse, reconnect a lose wire or mend those split trousers. It can be a lot easier than you think and it can be fun into the bargain, bringing a sense of satisfaction when you toast your next slice of bread.

So don’t throw away that toaster … go along to the Nutshuis, Riviervismarkt 5 on Tuesday 11 October between 5pm and 7pm.

Ultimately, our working party would like to launch a Repair Café in the Archipelbuurt. We will be following progress in the Nutshuis and will keep you posted!

Let's use what we've got with care

We have an extremely motivated and energetic new A&W working group for sustainability in the neighbourhood. Its motto is “new energy” for Archipel & Willemspark.

Contact person Marjan Teesing has just been on a Solar Tour organised by NL Agency to learn all about what can be done with the sun’s energy on a community level. She visited a fire station in Houten powered by transparent sun panels on its dome-shaped, glass roof and “our own” Overbosch swimming pool in the Bezuidenhout district, which has the largest “sun collector” in the Netherlands.

She also points out that there are lots of “little things” we can all do ourselves on a personal level to help sustainability in our district, like being more conscious about our use of drinking water for example.

One resident in Atjehstraat (and many others too I’m sure) has installed a water butt in her garden, which collects the rain water from her neighbours' roofs and balconies. The environment is better off (less water consumption) and the soft rain water is far better for the plants than hard drinking water.

Every “little bit” helps!

If you are doing your bit and have come up with a sustainability idea however simple or small let us know. We'd love to hear about it!

Archipel/Willemspark in 2040

To become a climate-neutral city in 2040 The Hague needs to make energy savings. The Energy Outlook provides answers to the question of how energy should ideally be supplied to The Hague in 2040 and what the municipality can do to realise its aims.

There are seven spearheads: energy savings, heat and cold storage systems, solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, district heating and extraction of energy from renewable sources like biomass. The basic principle is that the energy supply should be sustainable, affordable and reliable. The municipality will work together with residents and businesses in order to realise a CO2-neutral city.

The A&W working group Sustainability has been set up in our neighbourhood. Supporters and think-tankers are most welcome. Contact marjan@archipelwillemspark.nl

New Energy Sources for the Archipel neighbourhood and Willemspark

How can we insulate our homes (many of which are more than one hundred years old) and increase their comfort? How can we decrease dependence on fossil fuels? How can we invest as a community in our own “green current.” What are the rules and guidelines for this?

Municipality

I posed these questions to the Department of Sustainable Building.

Apparently, the existing rules are simple. For most changes to the exterior of a house you will need a permit. For instance, solar panels should not be visible from the street. You can insulate your roof from the outside if its height and appearance remain the same. For insulation of floors or a roof subsidies are available.(see www.energiesubsidiewijzer)

Vogelwijk

It is very interesting to observe what is happening in the Vogelwijk neighbourhood. They started a cooperative association, the VogelwijkEnergiek, which already has over 250 members.  They have a very ambitious sustainability program.  Their goals are to become 50% greener by 2015, save energy consumption by 20%, and install 20% more solar panels on their roofs.

Analysis

The municipality wants to make an analysis of the houses in our neighbourhood. To see what measures (insulation, , geothermal heat, self-generation of electricity by wind or other means) will be the most desirable for the houses in this neighbourhood.

We need to enlist people who want to help us. We need your support and expertise!

If you want to support this neighbourhood initiative please contact: marjan@archipelwillemspark.nl

New energy in Archipel&Willemspark!

How can we become greener?

Our characteristic and charming neighbourhood largely contains houses built between 1880 and 1910. Many of these houses have high ceilings, walls that are one brick thick, large, single-paned windows… and badly insulated floors and roofs.

Our neighbourhood has facades of historical interest protected by the Historic Heritage law. They are difficult to insulate. Energy costs for individual and business consumers have to be reduced. At the same time, we feel that we, as a community, also have a responsibility for reducing excessive production of CO2 in the atmosphere around us.

Some people in the neighbourhood with a mutual interest in sustainable energy have come together. Marjan Teesing, who just started writing a column in the Archipel/Willemspark community newspaper, talks about her first forays into understanding the complicated world of sustainability and energy.  An investigation into subsidies for solar panels on the roof of her house triggered a thorough study of the subject. And so she entered the fascinating world of windmills/windturbines, solar panels, natural warmth of the earth, energy from the sea, biomass energy, etc. She then wondered what might be the best technology for our neighbourhood. So she studied The Hague City Council’s rules and regulations on public spaces. She spread the word and found neighbours who are already working in various areas related to the environment. This rapidly growing group of enthusiastic people wants to participate and contribute to an initiative to benefit of our environment.

There are other growing movements in different towns and communities in the Netherlands, some of which have already taken up the challenge successfully. For example, Vogelwijk Energiek, a cooperative of households in The Hague, together with Eneco, blew new life into a dismantled wind turbine at Zuiderstrand. All participating households now profit from the communal energy it produces.

A very interesting website worth a visit is the Delft University of Technology’s Centre for Sustainable Urban Areas (in English) at www.tudelft.nl.

Car-sharing proves a successful alternative

And then there were 5 ...

100 car-sharing spots in The Hague

29 March 2009 - There is increasing demand for car-sharing services as an alternative to privately held and rental cars. Greenwheels has expanded the number of reserved parking locations for carshares in The Hague to 100.

The one at Burgemeester Patijnlaan 59 [nr.113] increases the number in Archipel&Willemspark to five.

Subsidy for "green roofs" extended till 1 November 2014

19 October 2011 - In line with their policy to reduce excessive CO2 production, the City Council wants to encourage the 'planting' of green roofs because they mean less energy is required for heating and less wasted in the cooling down process.

The subsidy is proving popular among both private individuals and companies. So far applications for 12,000 m2 of green roofs have been submitted, including one from Panorama Mesdag!

Source: De Posthoorn, Wednesday 19 October 2011

The Hague Invests in "green roofs" till 1 September 2011

14 May 2009 From 1 June individuals and small businesses in The Hague can apply for a subsidy to install a “green roof”. The Municipality of The Hague is to invest €700,000 in the next two years in subsidies for green roofs in the city. A green roof is a flat or slightly sloping roof on which plants and even trees can be planted, and has many environmental advantages.

Property owners are eligible for a subsidy of €25 per square metre of “green” roof up to a maximum amount of  €20,000. The initiative continues till 1 September 2010 as long as stocks last.

Advantages

The green roofs will contribute in all sorts of ways to a better city environment. For example cutting down on airborne particulate matter and noise as well as taking the pressure off the drainage and sewerage system because the roofs absorb rainwater. In the summer they have a cooling and insulating effect on city and homes alike. And … they help prolong the life of the roof and give us a greener world.

Conditions

The minimum roof area is 6 square metres.  The installation must be carried by a professional firm and comply with building regulations. Maximum subsidy per applicant is €20,000; the equivalent to an 800-square-metre green roof. Owners of properties with larger roofs can apply to the existing grant scheme for sustainable building.

An application form and details of the conditions is available from 1 June at district council offices and from www.denhaag.nl/groenedaken and www.denhaag.com

Latest update on activities - March 2011

Renovation of Nassauplein
Councillor Sander Dekker visited Nassauplein and the following is anticipated:

  • There will be no structural changes to this central garden; major refurbishments are impossible because of spending cuts;
  • Lay out of greenery will be improved; the working group will discuss this shortly with Gerrit van der Hut, council administrator for public parks and gardens;
  • Low fences along the flower beds will be repaired;
  • Containers near the WW II monument will be relocated next to the other containers on Nassauplein;
  • Current lamp posts will not be replaced.

Independently of the working group, Nassauplein residents have submitted a petition to the City Council (also signed by various embassies on the square) to prevent the gardens from flling into rack and ruin. Derk Hazekamp will keep in touch with this group in order to join forces and to prevent working at cross purposes with each other.

Trees in neighbourhood
For budgetary reasons the number of new trees to be planted cannot exceed twenty. This spring Derk Hazekamp will do the rounds with council representative Gerrit van der Hut, (responsible for public parks and gardens) to decide where these trees will be planted.

Glass recycling containers on Burg. Patijnlaan
The situation has slightly improved, but the glass recycling containers on Burg. Patijnlaan are still a source of nuisance. The City Council is open to alternative locations but with a number of conditions, i.e. a lorry should be able to park close to the containers for emptying.

Noor Mulder (Couperusduin apartment complex) has already asked on previous occasions that the containers should be hidden from view by shrubbery. .A council representative will investigate whether this is possible.

New football goals for Archipelschool playground

The playground behind the Archipelschool is a favourite place for our kids to play football. Unfortunately, sometimes excitement runs so high that the balls sometimes fly over the fence, landing in adjacent gardens. This often results in the dangerous scaling of the fence to retrieve the balls.

Very shortly the council will replace the existing goals with two modified versions. They are smaller (approx. 0.85 x 1.20 m) which means the game has to be played more precisely and closer to the ground to get the balls in the net. This will help reduce the distance of the shots and in turn the risk of the balls flying over the fence.

Work to replace the goals will start on Monday 23 May and take a maximum of two days.

Keep bikes and greenery under control together

Bikes

Now that spring is here with summer well on the way, a walk round the block in our lovely neighbourhood is even more attractive – as is a bike ride. So let us all consider our neighbours and keep the pavements free of obstacles. For mums with buggies, people in wheelchairs and the elderly, sometimes negotiating their way between the house-front gardens, the parked cargo bikes and the bicycles left every which way can be really difficult. Now and again there is just no way through and they have to step into the road or cross to the other side of the street.

Our bike inundated district lacks safe parking points for bicyles. More “fietsnietjes” (hitching posts for bikes) would be welcome. But even worse, those already installed are often out of commission because of the abandoned bikes attached to them!  So report this to the council “contactlijn” on 14070 or their visit their website at

http://www.denhaag.nl/home/bewoners/to/Melding-openbare-ruimte.htm

Pruning

Many of the house-front gardens are a joy to the eye but some are rather overgrown and you could lose an eye if you don’t watch out. Maybe you inherited one from the former resident and have no idea about pruning. So we appeal to the neighbours who do know a thing or two: give the novices a hand. There must be plenty of green-fingered experts about going by the beautifully pruned wisterias in our neighbourhood. And those who need some help tidying up their house-front gardens can get in touch too.  In this way, together we can start a-neighbour-helps-a-neighbour-prune initiative and all enjoy our green community together!

Plastic recycling containers relocated

Photos:  Webteam

8 April 2011 – Residents on Nassauplein and representatives of the A&W residents Association decided enough was enough: the huge recyclinging containers directly in front of the Centraal Monument voor gevallen PTT-ers (employees of the postal services killed in action) by Hildo Krop had to be moved. In consultation with the City Council it was agreed to relocate the recycling containers for plastic next to the other containers on Nassauplein. It is unfortunate that the container for old clothes has not yet been moved and not everyone has taken the trouble to find out where the other containers have gone.

The relocation is part of a minor facelift for Nassauplein.

Free graffiti removal?

As part of its responsibility to preserve the quality of life in our community, the Archipel & Willemspark Residents Association has closed a contract with The Hague Municipal Council (the so-called graffitiregeling) making it possible  for propery owners in the neighbourhood to benefit from the free (collective) removal of graffiti.

Just complete the authorization form and you become part of the collective clean-up arrangement. If your property is already (or in the future) defaced with graffiti also complete the defacement registration form and mail the forms to openbareruimte@archipelwillemspark.nl or send them to Martijn van Faassen of the A&W Public Space working group at Laan Copes van Cattenburch 100, 2585 GE Den Haag. The working group will coordinate the registrations and monitor the timely removal of the graffiti within the specified time-frame.

With the ‘Den Haag Schoon!’ campaign the Municipality of The Hague aims to make the city much cleaner by 2010. The extensive campaign will provide residents with information about how everyone can contribute to a cleaner city. For example, by putting out rubbish in the proper way, separating waste and keeping litter off our streets.
The municipality wants to make residents more aware of their influence on a cleaner city and will be called upon to actively contribute to ‘Den Haag Schoon!’ Extra attention will be paid to existing initiatives but there will also be room for new ideas and initiatives. You can submit you ideas via the Dutch-language municipal website. More ...

Brainstorm and participate in the working party Public Space

When Dorien de Buck approached me to take over the chairmanship of the working party ‘Public Space’, it already has a number of successes to its name.

In the Surinamestraat the proliferation of rogue posts has been stopped. An information evening was organized for those living around the Deliplantsoen to discuss the accommodation of dogs and playing children. Also the plans to return the Nassauplein to its former glory are beginning to take shape. The working party functions too as a go-between for the community committee with the municipality. These are just a few examples.

Given all the plans this working party still wants realise, it was no indulgence to ask for reinforcements. The couple of months I have now been involved in the working party, has transformed me from an innocent passerby to an alert local resident.

“Perhaps the pavement could be widened here?”, “Couldn’t we do with more bicycle racks here?” “Request some more of those litterbins, the  model that can be attached to  lampposts”. And so on.

“Banka Project”

The biggest project the working party is involved in at this moment is the Bankastraat.  Concrete, rapid changes  the working party is currently keeping an eye on, are the plans concerning the extension of the Albert Heijn. We are involved in close

consultation with the supermarket management to that ensure that the immediate surroundings are not detrimentally affected.

Something less immediate, but nonetheless important, is the further development of improvements to the Bankastraat. There is still a long way to go. If it is were up to us, it will become a street - along which buses drive at an acceptable speed - where you can choose on which cafe terrace you sit, where different trees grow and shrubs will bloom, where there is somewhere to park your bike and where it is a nice place to be.

If you are interested and have time to become involved, then do please get in touch.
