THE HAGUE HERITAGE DAYS 2010

Open Monumentendag 2010

11 - 12 September

Brochure The Hague Heritage Days

During the weekend of 11 and 12 September historic buildings in The Hague will once again open their doors to the public for Heritage Days 2010 (Open Monumentendag). Many of the buildings are open only during this weekend, offering you the unique opportunity to peek inside. The theme this year for this national weekend is ‘The 19th Century’.

Buildings in The Hague from this period specially open during this weekend include Sociëteit De Witte, the Scheveningen lighthouse, the Teresia van Avila Church and the Magic Lantern Museum. A number of residential neighbourhoods were constructed in this period such as Duinoord, the Nassaukwartier, Van Stolkpark, Willemspark and Archipel. The 19th century character of these neighbourhoods has been well preserved.

Source: www.denhaag.nl

The locations open to the public in the Archipelbuurt are the trio of cemeteries: the Jewish Cemetery, Timorstraat, which predates the 19th century in fact (ca. 1690); the Roman Catholic Cemetery - St Petrus Banden (1831), Kerkhoflaan; and the Municipal Cemetery (1830), Kerkhoflaan, and as ever the Peace Palace on the edge of our district.

There will also be boat trips with Willemsvaart on both days from 10:00 to 17:00 along the Koninginnegracht and Kanaal to Westbroekpark and the Waterpartij Lake. The Willemsvaart is named after King William I who, at the request of Mayor Copes van Cattenburch, gave instructions for a waterway to be dug near the coast. The first part, the Koninginnegracht, was dug between 1826 and 1834. The second part, the Kanaal, was built between 1854 and 1864. Pick-up point: Koningskade/Dr. Kuyperstraat - Endpoint: Madurodam

Have you got talent? The subject of the photo must be (part of) an historical building in our beautiful city of The Hague. The winning photo will appear on the cover of the Open Monu- mentendag 2011 brochure. A maximum of three photos can be submitted by each participant.

Mallemolen ready for World Cup

14 June 2010 – The proprietors in Mallemolen, were already gearing up under the orange bunting at midday on Monday for the Netherland’s first World Cup match. Big screens everywhere - inside and outside - for guests to enjoy the scheduled Nederland-Denemarken. Fortunately, Oranje won 2-0.

And now on to the final, we hope. It certainly won’t for a lack of commitment on the part of café and restaurant owners; they’re ready for every match.

In The Hague many streets, houses, restaurants and cafés will turn orange during the month of the World Cup. Not a problem but there are a few rules of the road! Photo Gallery ...

Dear neighbour,

Welcome to Koninginnedag

in the Archipel neighbourhood!!

This year the 9th edition of the Archipel Koninginnedag party will take place and you are invited to join us to celebrate this typically Dutch holiday.

You might wonder, what exactly Konginnedag is, why do the Dutch celebrate it, and, most importantly, what is with all of the orange?

Koninginnedag or Queen’s Day is a national holiday in the Netherlands on 30 April.  Queen’s Day celebrates the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands and is supposed to be a day of national unity and “togetherness” (Dutch: saamhorigheid). The tradition started on 31 August 1885 on the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina, later Queen Wilhelmina.

Since 1949, after the ascension of Queen Juliana, Queen’s Day is celebrated on Queen Juliana’s birthday on 30 April.  Although Queen Beatrix’s birthday is on 31 January, she officially celebrates her birthday on 30 April.

Queen’s Day is known for its “freemarket” (Dutch: vrijmarkt) all over the country, where everybody is allowed to sell things on the street. Other activities during Queen’s Day are children’s games, individual musical performances, and music concerts. During the celebrations as reference to the colours of the House of Orange-Nassau (the royal lineage), people dress in the colour orange, which is sometimes called “orange craze”.

Entries to BBQ activities:

Look for the Archipel Orange Association in front of the Café Banka / Albert Hein on the Bankastraat the upcoming Saturdays; April 10th, 17th and 24th, where you can purchase your tickets for the BBQ and sign your children up for the fun activities planned during the day. The Archipel Orange Association also invites you to become a member of the Association, which supports the neighbourhood Queens Day celebration. Members receive a significant reduction on the BBQ tickets and a T-shirt!

If you would like to become a member, or continue your membership in the Archipel Orange Association, please transfer € 17,50 before April 15th to bank account 62.41.74.646 in name of Oranjevereniging Archipel te Den Haag. The membership is for a family.  Please include family name, home address and family make up. If you want to enjoy the BBQ please transfer an extra € 7,- per adult and € 4,- per child (excl. drinks).

Advantages of membership:

Members can freely join all activities and receive a discount on the BBQ. You will receive four drink tickets and you sponsor the ongoing activities of the association.  Without the membership you will pay € 15,- per adult and € 10,- per child (excl. drinks).

The organising committee will be on Bankastraat (close to café Banka) Saturday the 17 and 24 April so you can become a member.  Please also consider volunteering to help us on Queen’s day.  Volunteering is an important part of making this day fun for all is a wonderful way for new members of the community to meet neighbours and make new friends.  Please leave your name and number at the stand if you want to be a volunteer or contact us thru our e-mail: oranje@archipelbuurt.nl.

This year too, the Oranjevereniging Archipel intends to make

Koninginnedag/Oueen's Day a day to be remembered by all our local residents.

Balistraat Street Party - April 2010

Photography: Karen Kommer & Fritz Griffin

Balistraat has long honoured the ‘Straatfeest’ tradition.

Usually an outdoor event in the summer, this year we held it on Saturday 10 April. It had to be a culinary and, above all, convivial banquet with fellow street residents! A registration form was dropped in the letterbox of all 121 Bali-houses so that residents could indicate their interests. In all 80 replied and were assigned to one of the seven “private” Bali eating houses.

A Meet-and-Greet was organised during the afternoon in the Thirty-Seven restaurant-club (Balistraat 1A); kindly made available by the management free of charge. And Mr Nomura of the Sushi Okinawa restaurant (Balistraat 3) nextdoor treated us to a large dish of sushi.

Because of the extraordinarily beautiful weather, most of the afternoon’s programme took place outside in the large courtyard behind the uneven numbered Bali houses. We were very lucky!

“Oma” and “Opa” Gemstone/Broekarts of Kunsthandel De Edelsteen (Balistraat 82) distributed lovely amethyst and citrine crystals among the young ones who were fully occupied playing games, devouring pancakes and being entertained by Manny the clown.

Besides all this two fellow street inhabitants sang to the rest of the residents, encouraging everyone to get to know each other better and to network more.

A great success with young and old alike was Salvatore, who surprised us with his parrot show!

In short: a formula for a most memorable street party, which should certainly be repeated.

Bravo organisatiecomité !

Ellis Mensinga, May 2010
