Couperusduin campaign - Does traffic noise annoy you? It annoys me!

The spokesman for the City Council’s Borough Council Claims Department informed me that a complaint is effective only if a group of inhabitants protest by way of a petition.

Traffic speed ramps are not possible because of the passage of ambulances and fire engines. A camera, however, registering the speed is a possibility.

So join the campaign and sign the petition (and return it to me: see address below) as soon as possible so it can be still submitted to the Council before the end of the month.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Complaint from Surinamestraat

1 October 2011 – Contractors have caused months of inconvenience by leaving two industrial-size bags of rubble and garden waste outside Surinamestraat. Resident requests that action be taken to maintain the quality of the surroundings in this street in a conservation area full of listed buildings.

Pointless and misleading sign

1 October 2011 – Although the Russian ambassador left Surinamestraaat long ago, the sign indicating his privileged parking space still remains. Resident suggests that the sign be removed immediately so that residents or visitors can benefit from a sorely needed parking space.

Consideration for others

April 2011 – Bikes block the pavement. The owners are visiting another house. A polite request not to park the bikes here, didn’t help. It hasn’t helped for years.

Any tips on what can be done when confronted with such anti-social behaviour?

Every individual, group or community needs a VOICE that people are going to listen to. A voice that reflects who you are, your aims and expectations, your interests and concerns or just merely your rants and raves.

A new weekly programme, DUTCHBUZZ, is that listening ear, a sounding board and a reflective voice for the international and expat communities in the Netherlands.

The DUTCHBUZZ team of internationals and locals includes presenters, producers, journalists, writers, critics and sound engineers from at least 4 continents. Most of them view The Hague as their base and share a passion for radio.

“Have your say,” is what we say!

Streetbank is a website that helps you share and borrow things from your neighbours. It was originally the bright idea of Sam in Fulham, London. A member of the A&W Community Newspaper’s editorial team discovered it and now nineteen locals in our community have taken it to their hearts.

Brings communities together

Communities that help each other are closer, nicer and friendlier to live in. We all know Archipel & Willemspark is a nice place to live but this initiative could make it even nicer and help you get to know more of your neighbours.

Makes economic and environmental sense

It also makes sense economically. If there are 100 houses on your road and each of them uses a ladder maybe once a year to clean the guttering, they probably don’t all need their own ladder. One ladder shared between everyone should be enough.

Sign up now -  it’s easy

The site gives you access to a whole load of stuff, is good for the environment, saves you money and builds community all in one go. It is totally free to join, though to become a member you have to show that you are a little bit community spirited by offering one thing you would be willing to lend or give away. It can be really low-value items like DVDs, a guidebook or it can be higher value things like an old TV you want to get rid of.

An e-mail alerts you to a new member in the neighbourhood but you can choose exactly how much email you get on the email settings page. There’s a weekly newsletter with everything that’s new in your area and you can turn on (or off) other types of email too if you want to. More ...

Use your local website too

You can post what you have to offer on your local A&W website, too. We have a prikbord or a noticeboard (depending  whether you are Dutch or an international resident) where you can advertise things you want to sell or get rid of as well as things you are looking for.

Who's the local comedian?

Stand up Tijl Beckand

A well-known former fellow resident was born Tijl Maria Theresia Beckand on 30 July 1974 in The Hague. For the first 31 years of his life, Tijl lived in the Archipelbuurt. He wrote his first comedy sketches in The Hague. And yes, believe it or not, he did this in the Archipelbuurt. Tijl comes from a family in which everything was allowed and nothing  was forbidden; he didn’t have to go to school if he didn’t want to.

Among other things, Tijl Beckand is well-known for his role in the television comedy series “De Lama´s”, a group of four improvising comedians performing impressive, and utterly hilarious impressions, parodies and improvisation comedy, often using random artifacts to act out situations. He was the driving force of the programme from 2004 till 2008.

In 2005 Tijl moved away from the Archipelbuurt to Amsterdam to run his production company Night of Comedy and to be with his girlfriend. Tijl Beckand announced in 2008 that De Lama´s was to come to an end, much to the consternation of the fans of the show. He was back however in March 2009 with Ruben Nicolai and Ruben van der Meer in a new programme for AVRO called Budget TV. This programme featured the weekly soap “In Zak En As” (in sackcloth and ashes) in which Tijl played Gijs the lijkenwasser (washer of corpses). There were also talent shows but Budget TV not a great success.

Since then Tijl has regularly appeared on television in programmes like TV-Lab, Ranking The Stars, Gehaktdag and Echt Waar. He also launched the number 'Hørk' under the name 'MSiep & DJ Harko feat. Koepak' with Ruben van der Meer and Horace Cohen and a later version called 'Love Hørks' in February 2010.

Sign of the times: history uncovered

Passersby glance up curiously at the figure on the scaffolding poised with paintbrush in hand. What is he up to?

While renovating the blind wall of the property on the corner of Borneostraat and Madoerastraat Hulsebosch Constructies located at Borneostraat 197, noticed the faded letters from an earlier wall advertisement. Jac. G. Eich is listed under entry number H8268 at 2e Borneostraat in the directory of the Telefoondienst published in 1915 by the Hoofdbestuur de Posterijen en Telegrafie.

Apparently this family-run firm providing wallpaper, upholstery and bed-making services, was trading as far back as the late 1800s and the owner lived on the premises. The current owner, who gladly accepted Hulsebosch’s offer to restore the sign, is researching in the Municipal Archive for more information.

Meanwhile, the sign writer is gradually completing his labour of love: three layers of paint so far - the top one gold, to restore the sign to its former glory.

Hopefully the research will be completed in time for the September issue of the A&W community newspaper. Read the whole story then!

Your site was totally new to me and I am very impressed. I used to live in Malakkastraat and Javastraat and stayed with a titled Lady in the Alexanderhof and a friend in Malle Molen, opposite where Lottie vd Gaag lived. I also knew Baronesse Snoeckaert van Schouwberg (Javastraat) very well or Mrs. Stegeman, the painter Theo Bitter and several other people. All between 1959 and 1970.

If you have a digital newsletter, I would like to receive it!

Kind regards,

Valuable information on www.archipelbuurt.nl

My husband, Stan, and I attended the seminar “Feel even more at home in the Archipel” on Thursday 6th November. We have recently purchased a house in Delistraast and will be moving into the Archipelbuurt in December and were very interested to attend the seminar to learn more about our new Dutch neighbourhood.

We found out about the seminar while googling “Archipelbuurt” and came across the residents’ association Website. I believe you are responsible for the English part of the Website and also producing the flyer to advertise the seminar.

I just wanted to pass on my thanks to you for producing such an excellent English-language Website. We have used it on numerous occasions to search for restaurants and other businesses, and to learn more about the neighbourhood. Many thanks for all of your patient translation and for all of the valuable information you include. It is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Lisa
