Bust of Louis Couperus in Surinamestraat
restored to it's former glory

The imposing bust of the writer Louis Couperus, sculpted by Lambertus Sondaar, has stood at the end of the Surinamestraat for more than 40 years. Over the years the bust became rather the worse for wear: neglected, filthy and with no clear indication who the sitter was. The residents association of Surinamestraat couldn't stand it any longer and decided to take the initiative and organize a major facelift. Supported by the Louis Couperus Museum and with the cooperation of the Municipal Council they certainly succeeded.

On Wednesday 12 January 2005 with fitting ceremony, the official "unveiling" took place.
The event was rounded off with a glass of champagne in the Louis Couperus Museum in Javastraat, supplied by the residents association.

The bust is now once again a credit to the street and a fitting homage to the writer. Nearby at number 20 stands his family home where he wrote his first novel Eline Vere in 1888.
