Surveying in Mesdag’s time

While Mesdag made sketches for his Panorama from the highest dune in Scheveningen in 1880, the land surveyor traveled across the country to make a new map of the Netherlands. Both the painter and the surveyor looked for the high point in the landscape: the one for creating an optical illusion and the other for measuring distances. What are the differences in approach between the artist and the scientist?

The exhibition starts with a land surveying experiment on the Panorama and then shows the history of surveying based on the Special Collections of the TU Delft Library.. For details see  here.
