IN ALGERIA (lecture in Dutch)

What does Algeria look like today? Where did the strained situation in this enormous North African country come from? Only few people can report on this from their own experience. Henk Revis, former Dutch ambassador in Algeria (2004-2008) is one of them. When he took leave from diplomatic service he wrote the internal publication Nederland-Algerije. A relationship of four hundred years (2008). This book, that deserves to be read by a much larger group of readers, focusses in the first place on the eventful history of Algeria itself – its wars, religion and politics. But within that framework we meet a great number of remarkable Dutchmen like Louis Couperus and Marius Bauer. They belong to a group of enthousiastic travellers to whom the Orient was an artistic place of pilgrimage. Painters like  Menso Kamerlingh, Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig and Philippe Zilcken painted their impressions of Algeria on canvas.
Henk Revis allows the reader a glimpse behind the scenes of an embassy.
